Students Can Earn Fee Waivers on College Tour

Students considering private colleges in Virginia can earn application-fee waivers by visiting at least three institutions next week.

The deal has been offered annually since 1997 as part of Virginia Private College Week, which runs Monday through Aug. 1. It is meant to encourage students to see campuses before choosing a school.

"Colleges have personalities, and you cannot figure that out simply by looking at the Web site," Ken Huus of Sweet Briar College said.

It's also an opportunity to reassure parents that private college can be affordable, even during lean times, said Liv Heggoy, vice president of the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia, the week's sponsor.

"Most people are thinking that the sticker price is the amount they will pay," Heggoy said, "and that's almost always not the case."

Admissions officers at 25 schools, including Virginia Intermont College in the southwest and Marymount University in Arlington County, will synch schedules to ease students' travel logistics. For information, visit http://www.virginiaprivatecolleges.org.
