Must-See Sights on Road Trip From Los Angeles to San Francisco

Sunday, July 26, 2009

During our online chat (most Mondays at 2 p.m.), you ask and we answer your travel questions -- mostly. Here's one we couldn't get to last week.

My husband and I are going to California and want to drive up the coast from L.A. to San Francisco. Any suggestions for don't-miss things en route?

To do justice to this jaw-dropping drive, take Route 1 and allow at least two days. So much to see and do, but a few musts: the gorgeous Mediterranean-style city of Santa Barbara, tucked between mountains and ocean; the funky town of Cambria for cafes and galleries; San Simeon, William Randolph Hearst's sumptuous retreat; Big Sur for its stunning natural beauty; Monterey Bay for the aquarium and wild elephant seals; and, for sheer fun, the Santa Cruz boardwalk.
