7:30 P.M., DAILY GRILL, GEORGETOWN

Sherwin: I got there around 7:20. I went up to the hostess, and she sat me down. Some time passed, and she came back to me and said, "Your date called; she's running late." That was cool. More time passed, and then the manager came and said she called again and she's parking. Then he came back and said, "Your date went to the other Daily Grill, in Dupont Circle." I was like, "This is not a great start." But the manager and I were just laughing and joking. It was more funny than anything else.

Kareem: I actually work across from the Daily Grill [in Dupont]. I knew I had to be at the other one, but I was so nervous I just automatically stopped without thinking and ran in. [ I ] said, "I'm here," and they were like, "Well, we don't know what you're here for." So the maitre d' let me talk to [Sherwin] on the phone. I said to just order me a glass of wine and I'll be there in a few minutes. Then I took a cab over.

Sherwin: I [had] waited about an hour [when] finally she came around the corner. I was like, Okay, yeah, this is definitely worth the wait. She was absolutely stunning.

Kareem: The first thing I noticed was his eyes and his smile. I was like, Oh, my God -- when he smiled at me he made everything okay. It was a pleasant surprise. I thought he was going to be like, "I'm done. You're just a little bit too rude" for being late, but he was like, "It's okay," and gave me the biggest hug. He never mentioned anything about me being late.

Sherwin: I sat back down and we started talking. She's a personal trainer, and we're both into fitness.

Kareem: He's a bodybuilder [but also] an IT man, so I thought, Oh, my God, he's a brainiac and a body person. We talked about where we've traveled. We're both very adventurous. We're both into air sports and water sports and land sports.

Sherwin: We have a ton in common. Family is important to her, and I related to her that family is really important to me. Our kids are the same age, so we were comparing notes. We talked about Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 and started talking about old music. After close to 30 minutes of talking we decided to get something to eat. We were just eating and talking about our lives. She had a list of what she wanted in a guy, so we were going down our lists.

Kareem: We did it where we took turns naming things. And every time he named one or I named one, we'd be like, "Oh, yeah, that's mine, too." Even the ones we didn't have in common were complementary. That's when I knew him and I were going to be hanging tight. I said, "If we never become anything else, we're going to be the best of friends." Both of us have the same mind-set: When we have another committed relationship, we want it to be with our best friend.

Sherwin: We were laughing and joking around. She has a great sense of humor. I was very surprised at how she's still single. I let her know that.

Kareem: About when our entrees came we got a little spicy. We had this very flirty kind of sexual innuendo conversation. He would kind of say a flirty thing, and I would start a conversation and stop and say, "Oooh, I'm not saying that." And he would be like, "That's all right, because I know exactly what you're going to say." It was like we had known each other forever.

Sherwin: There was definitely chemistry. I was flirting. She was definitely flirting -- a lot of touchy-feely kind of thing, especially when we took the pictures. There were a few pictures where we were kissing, a little peck.
