A Temperature Check for Mr. Will

Saturday, July 25, 2009

One wonders from what data set George F. Will derived his happy, if ill-informed, assurance that global mean temperatures have not changed over the adult life of a 29-year-old ["Climate Fixers' Hard Sell," op-ed, July 23]. The instrumental findings of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies and James Hansen might disabuse Mr. Will of his belief.

Contrary to Mr. Will's assertions, there has been a strong warming trend over the past 30 years, a trend shown to be due primarily to increasing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The 10 warmest years, since the beginning of the global instrumental record some 150 years ago, all occurred from 1997 to 2008. One must wonder to what lengths Mr. Will goes to find the rare source that fits his contrarian preconceptions.

Politics and science, like religion and science, are two fundamentally different worlds. I suggest Mr. Will's considerable talents be directed toward political commentary only.
