MARYLAND
Body of Girl Recovered From River
The body of an 11-year-old girl who went missing Friday after large waves knocked her into the Sassafras River was recovered Sunday by the Maryland Natural Resources Police.
Sgt. Art Windemuth said police found the girl's body half a mile from the scene of the accident at 9 a.m. Sunday. The discovery, part of a three-day search for the girl, was made in the area of Ordinary Point, near Kennedyville, Md.
The girl, whose name was not released because she was a juvenile, was thrown into the water about 4 p.m. Friday when large waves hit the boat she was in. Witnesses said the waters immediately enveloped the girl, Windemuth said. She was not wearing a life vest.
The Maryland Natural Resources Police are investigating the cause of the accident, Windemuth said.
Windemuth said this is the sixth boating fatality in Maryland this year.
