The driver in Friday's fatal crash involving a Calvert County sheriff's deputy has been identified as Rachael Alexandra Campbell, a teenager who graduated from Northern High School this past spring.

Campbell, 18, of Dunkirk, was killed shortly before 10:47 a.m. when Deputy C. Wayne Wells, 34, struck her vehicle with his police cruiser.

Wells was traveling northbound on Route 4, responding to a "priority" emergency call with his lights and sirens on as he approached the intersection of Route 4 and Apple Way, the entrance of the Apple Greene subdivision, sheriff's officials said.

Campbell, driving a blue 1997 Buick LeSabre, was making a left turn into the development from southbound Route 4. As she crossed the two lanes of northbound Route 4, Wells came into the intersection, causing the crash, officials said.

Campbell's vehicle, with severe damage to the passenger side, was forced off the road and caught fire. Campbell was pronounced dead on the scene, officials said.

Wells's cruiser rolled over and came to rest on its roof in a culvert on the east side of Route 4, trapping the deputy. After being extracted from the car, Wells was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with critical injuries. He was released Sunday.

The Calvert County sheriff's office has asked Anne Arundel County police and Maryland State Police to conduct an independent investigation of the crash.
