Bennett Retires, Spurns Ravens

Wide receiver Drew Bennett, who agreed to a one-year contract Friday with the Baltimore Ravens, announced Sunday he's retiring instead.

"After returning home from Baltimore this weekend, a previous knee injury flared up, making me realize that I am unable to play another NFL season," Bennett said in a written statement, according to the Ravens' Web site. . . .

Robert Morgenthau, the Manhattan district attorney, told the New York Post prosecutors are insisting former New York Giants wide reciever Plaxico Burress spend time in jail for the incident last year in which Burress accidentally shot himself in the leg at a New York nightclub.

Thomas Traded Again

The Minnesota Timberwolves picked up point guard Chucky Atkins from Oklahoma City in exchange for center Etan Thomas, who spent the previous six seasons with the Wizards, and four second-round draft picks next year. Minnesota also got guard Damien Wilkins. . . .

Steve Nash agreed to a two-year, $22 million contract extension that will keep the two-time MVP point guard with the Suns through 2011-12. . . .

The Charlotte Bobcats are finalizing a swap of 26-year-old centers that would send Emeka Okafor to the New Orleans Hornets for Tyson Chandler, sources told the Associated Press. . . .

A source tells the AP that the Dallas Mavericks have reached an agreement with free agent big man Drew Gooden, though the deal has not yet been finalized. Gooden also wrote "Dallas is the team!" on his Twitter feed.

Forrest Shot at Robbers

Atlanta police say former IBF and WBC champion and 1992 Olympian Vernon Forrest exchanged gunfire with robbery suspects before being shot to death.

Lt. Keith Meadows said investigators believe between 20 and 24 shots were fired from two guns. Meadows says police recovered Forrest's gun and that one shell casing belonging to that gun was recovered.

Police say Forrest had stopped at a gas station Saturday night and was putting air in his tire at the time of the robbery. He was shot multiple times in the back.

Green Wins Canadian

Nathan Green won the Canadian Open for his first PGA Tour victory. He beat Retief Goosen with a par on the second hole of a playoff in the rain-delayed tournament.

After Green missed a 12-foot birdie attempt on the par-4 17th, Goosen's eight-foot par try slid right, ending the first Monday finish in the national championship since 1988. . . .

NASCAR accused Jeremy Mayfield of lying to a federal court about the chronology of a second random drug test, offering to provide an audio tape of the conversation in which Mayfield was told to submit a sample. The suspended driver says the call went to voicemail. . . .

A fight between fans at a Honduran soccer game in Tegucigalpa left two people dead, including a 12-year-old boy. . . .

Olympic volleyball silver medalist Kim Willoughby, 28, has been sentenced to five years probation for punching Sara Daniel, breaking her nose and eye socket, during a 2006 altercation outside a Honolulu nightclub. . . .

Brittany Hayes scored three goals to lead the United States to a 9-6 victory against Spain in the quarterfinals of the women's water polo world championships.
