WPS: Washington Freedom vs. Boston Breakers Preview

Wednesday, July 29, 2009

Records: Breakers (7-6-4, 25 points), Freedom (6-6-5, 23).

Where: Maryland SoccerPlex, Boyds.

When: 8 p.m. TV: Comcast SportsNet.

Outlook: Needing a win to stay in the playoff hunt for one of the three remaining postseason berths, the Freedom got two goals from Abby Wambach, who was named Women's Professional Soccer player of the week, and a late game-winner from midfielder Allie Long to down the Red Stars, 3-2, on Sunday.

Things don't get any easier for Washington on Wednesday, however, as it hosts Boston in a game with critical implications both in the playoff hunt and in seeding.

Tied with Sky Blue FC for the fourth and final berth, the Freedom is 0-2-1 this season against Boston, and though Washington leads the league in scoring (26 goals), it is also tops in the WPS in goals against (28).

Boston is unbeaten in its last three games and can clinch a playoff spot with a win. The Breakers have not allowed a goal in 323 consecutive minutes and have five shutouts in their past seven games.
