The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission officially hired Jerry N. Johnson, the former head of the D.C. Water and Sewer Authority, as its general manager Wednesday after agreeing to a nearly four-year contract.
Johnson, whose tenure in the District was marred by controversy over elevated levels of lead in the tap water, will start Sept. 8, and his contract is scheduled to end June 30, 2013. He will be paid $250,000 a year. The WSSC's six-member board approved his hiring unanimously.
The WSSC, which provides water and sewer services to 1.8 million people in Prince George's and Montgomery counties, has been without a permanent leader for 17 months.
Johnson will replace Andrew D. Brunhart, who left in February 2008 after his three-year contract was not renewed.
