GETTING THERE

US Airways, Northwest and Delta have one-stop flights to Charleston from BWI starting at $186. Parkersburg is about an hour's drive north on Interstate 77. A road trip from Washington -- through the rolling West Virginia hills with plenty of "Ahhh!" vistas -- takes about 5 1/2 hours.

WHERE TO STAY

Old Carriage House Bed and Breakfast (118 12th St., 304-428-9588, http://www.oldcarriagehouse.com). In the Julia-Ann Square Historic District. Has two rooms featuring four-poster beds that start at $110 and a family suite that takes up the third floor and starts at $150.

There's also a handful of chain hotels in Parkersburg and in nearby Vienna and Williamstown.
