A Metro employee was struck by track repair equipment and critically injured near the Vienna station on the Orange Line late Sunday, Metro officials said.

The incident occurred about 9:50 p.m. during scheduled track maintenance work near the station in Fairfax County.

Metro spokeswoman Angela Gates said the employee was to be flown by helicopter for medical treatment.

Metro spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein said that the employee was critically injured but that details were not available immediately.

The Orange Line had been operating on a single track between the West Falls Church and Vienna stations throughout the weekend to accommodate the repair project, which involved replacing crossties on the rails.

After the incident, Metro suspended rail service from West Falls Church to Vienna. Shuttle buses were being provided late Sunday, Metro said. It was not immediately clear whether the incident would affect service on the Orange Line on Monday.

Preliminary reports described the repair equipment involved as a "track unit." Some of the equipment used in track repair runs on the rails, but no details about the equipment were available.

From October 2005 to November 2006, four Metro employees were killed when they were struck by Metro trains.
