Haynesworth Won't Play in Redskins Preseason Opener

Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth is scheduled to sit out the Redskins' preseason opener Thursday against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium, which is no surprise.

The other day, Haynesworth said he was pleased with the number of reps he had received to that point in camp and he did not anticipate playing in the preseason opener. "It doesn't matter to me, I'll do whatever they need me to do, but the point is to be ready to start the season," Haynesworth said. "I'm not one of these guys who needs to get a ton of reps [in the preseason] to get ready.

"After you've been in this game a while, you start to know your body and know what you need to do, and I feel good about where I'm at right now. You can always do better, but I think I'm picking up what we do and getting more and more comfortable with it every day. You just want to keep making progress on everything. I think it's going pretty good."

Segal Visits -- and Shoots Down Vick Talk

The minute I saw agent Joel Segal chatting with Vinny Cerrato this morning under a tent at Redskins Park, I figured I would soon be sitting at my laptop typing this name: Michael Vick.

Despite having been the first to report that Vick would not be joining the Redskins, I knew the speculation would start swirling again because Segal was watching practice with his buddy and, well, that's just the way things work in today's 24-hour news cycle. Segal goes way back with Cerrato and counts several Redskins among his clients, including quarterback Jason Campbell, free safety LaRon Landry and cornerback DeAngelo Hall.

Obviously, though, there is intense media and fan interest in Vick and where the quarterback might sign, and Segal knows how this works. He would not have been chilling with Cerrato at a Redskins practice, which was open to the media, unless he was willing to talk about Vick.

Segal and Cerrato spoke with Campbell and Hall after practice and then Segal gave the media some time. After the scribes lobbed a few softball warmup questions at Segal, the conversation turned to Vick.

"No," Segal answered when asked if Vick could land with the Skins. "No chance."

That should shut the door on a Vick-Redskins union -- at least as much as any door can be closed when it comes to this team and the potential acquisition of a high-profile player.

All of the Vick-Redskins stuff was helpful for talk radio for a few days, but there was no way, in my opinion, that an agent who has been doing this as long as Segal would steer Vick to the Redskins with Campbell still atop the depth chart. Segal and Campbell have a strong relationship and Segal knows Campbell as well as anyone outside of his family. Segal has worked to help put Campbell in the best possible environment to succeed, and negotiating with the Redskins on behalf of Vick, even if the quarterback eventually signed elsewhere, would stir potential problems for Campbell.

As for where Vick might sign, Segal was predictable in his answers, revealing little. "We're taking it one day at a time," Segal said. "We've talked to a host of teams, and Mike's excited to get back with the next opportunity."
