Olympic gold medal swimmer Michael Phelps was involved in a minor auto accident in downtown Baltimore on Thursday night but was not injured, police said.

Phelps, who won eight gold medals at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, was driving a Cadillac Escalade that collided with a Honda Accord in an intersection about 9 p.m., said Anthony Guglielmi, a Baltimore police spokesman. Phelps and the two passengers in his SUV did not require medical attention, Guglielmi said.

The woman in Honda "was shaken up after the accident" and was taken to a hospital as a precaution, Guglielmi said.

Officers interviewed Phelps after the accident and described him as "coherent," according to Guglielmi. Police found no reason to perform any tests on him, Guglielmi said. Officers also examined both vehicles and found no evidence of drugs or alcohol, he said.

Phelps's SUV had a crumpled hood and the vehicle was on a tow truck. The front of the Accord was damaged on the driver's side.
