Fall Festivals in Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania

Sunday, August 16, 2009

During our online chat (most Mondays at 2 p.m.), you ask your travel questions and we answer them -- mostly. Here's one we couldn't get to last week.

Any good fall festivals within three or so hours of here that we can make a long weekend in September/October?

Fall festivals are a great excuse to explore. Three regional favorites: the Eastern Shore Birding and Wildlife Festival, Sept. 17-20 in Cape Charles, Va., celebrating the fall migration of millions of songbirds (757-787-2460, http://www.esvachamber.org); the Fall Foliage Festival, Oct. 3-4 and 10-11 in Bedford County, Pa., with lots of leaves, crafts, music, quilts and food (800-765-3331, http://www.bedfordfallfestival.com); and Bridge Day, Oct. 17, near Fayetteville, W.Va., when thousands converge to watch jumpers parachute 876 feet from the New River Gorge Bridge into the waters below (800-927-0263, http://www.officialbridgeday.com). For more festival options, see the tourism sites for Virginia (http://www.virginia.org), Maryland (http://www.visitmaryland.org), Pennsylvania (http://www.visitpa.com) and West Virginia (http://www.escape2wv.com).
