GETTING THERE

Delta and US Airways have one-stop flights from Dulles, BWI and Reagan National airports through Charlotte and Atlanta to Craven County Regional Airport in New Bern, N.C. Fares start at about $228. Beaufort is about 43 miles southeast of New Bern.

WHAT TO DO

Beaufort Historical Association, 138 Turner St., 252-728-5225. Offers guided walking tours of the Old Burying Ground and buildings in the Beaufort historic district, as well as double-decker bus tours around town. Tickets are $8, $4 children; combination tickets are $12, $6 children. Available at the adjacent Robert W. and Elva Faison Safrit Historical Center.
