A water main break in Alexandria shut down a section of South Reynolds Street on Wednesday morning, forcing commuters to use alternate routes.
"South Reynolds Street is shut down in both directions from the 200 block down to Duke Street," said Jody Donaldson, a police spokesman.
There is "no set detour" for that street in a residential area, he said, and officials were expecting repairs to take at least eight hours. The burst pipe, which measured 12 inches in diameter, was reported about 6:45 a.m., said David Barney, a spokesman for the water company, Virginia American Water. "The break is pretty big," he said.
About 600 residents are without water, Barney said. Water pressure remains steady at other homes and businesses in the area, he said, and no health advisories have been issued.
