Fire investigators have charged an Upper Marlboro man with setting a house fire that critically injured a Prince George's County firefighter in April.
John A. Daniels Jr., 58, was charged Tuesday with first- and second-degree arson, malicious burning, and reckless endangerment in connection with the April 8 fire at 87 Herrington Drive in the Largo area. The blaze critically burned firefighter Daniel McGown after he went inside to douse the flames. He returned to full-duty last month.
According to charging documents, Daniels set the fire because a woman who lived in the home had recently ended an extramarital affair with him. The woman, Karen Bivins, told investigators that Daniels wanted her "straightened out," according to the documents. Police said they found a pink shirt on the scene of the blaze that tested positive for gasoline and contained Daniels's DNA.
Daniels was released from jail Wednesday after posting $500,000 bond. He declined to comment, saying he could not do so until he sought the advice of an attorney. In addition to injuring McGown, the fire caused nearly $200,000 in damage, authorities said.
