A Prince George's County police officer was seriously injured Wednesday after she lost control of her cruiser on Ritchie Road in the Forestville area and slammed into an electrical pole, authorities said.

The officer was responding to an alarm at a Dunkin' Donuts on Central Avenue with her lights and siren on just after noon when she came upon another vehicle near Sunny Lane, police said. The officer swerved to avoid that vehicle, authorities said, and crashed into the pole.

Firefighters worked for nearly 45 minutes to remove the officer from the wreckage, and she was taken to a nearby hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Police said it was raining at the time of the crash, which probably contributed to the officer's losing control.

Police did not identify the officer.
