A Dog's Life: Happy Hour at Larry's Lounge
Washingtonians are a hardworking bunch. We work long hours, weekends and the occasional holiday. So when we do unwind we not only want a beer, but some good company, too. Mix in a good cause, and we are there.
Every Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m., Larry's Lounge in Dupont Circle welcomes pets and their owners for Yappy Hour. The evening is sponsored by the National Museum of Crime & Punishment, City Dogs (a dog day-care center) and Doggie Style (a bakery, boutique and pet spa) and supports the Washington Humane Society.
The idea for Yappy Hour came about during the Michael Vick dog fighting case. Larry's manager, Dave Purdy, and staff members at the museum agreed that a dog-friendly happy hour could help raise awareness about crimes against animals.
During the event, fliers on animal abuse are distributed, and a portion of sales benefits the Washington Humane Society. The society also occasionally brings out dogs that need adopting. One such dog, a Chihuahua named Butterball, found a home as a result of a Yappy Hour.
On a recent Wednesday, the patio at Larry's was crowded with guests and their dogs. Amanda Crosier and Cindy Vazquez moved to Washington from New York about two months ago and have stopped by Yappy Hour several times. Coco (a black pug) and Roscoe (a French bulldog) have become useful ice breakers in the women's search to find new friends in the city.
Since their dogs are stuck inside while they are at work, Crosier said, Yappy Hour gives the dogs a chance to get outside while Crosier and Vazquez have some fun.
"We like taking them everywhere," Vazquez said. "They like going on adventures."
