Cox Communication is moving forward with the roll-out of its own wireless network by announcing today that it will use Qualcomm's Brew technology on its handset to enable the distribution of games and other applications. Release.
Cox anticipates building its own network later this year, but in the meantime, is using Sprint?s network. Considering that Sprint (NYSE: S) uses Qualcomm's Brew platform, the decision is logical.
Recently, Verizon Wireless renegotiated its contract with Brew to more easily allow the distribution of free apps. Previously, developers were unlikely to give away apps because it cost a fee to do so-but now the thinking goes that if you give away some for free, it will encourage users to pay for others. Terms of Cox's contract were not revealed.
