The Race to Richmond: What Happened Last Week

Sunday, August 23, 2009

The Democrat, who started the week with some discouraging poll numbers, took a one-day break from campaigning to attend a special legislative session called by Gov. Timothy M. Kaine (D) on Wednesday. He finished big, with a far-reaching speech on the stakes of the campaign at George Mason University on Friday, his first television ad of the general election and a whirlwind trip through central and southern Virginia.

The Republican spent time at the University of Virginia talking about higher education. He continued his RV trip across the state, greeting workers at the Newport News shipyards near dawn Thursday, and headed out to some rural campaign stops toward the end of the week. His campaign has been trying to ward off questions about his record on abortion and other social issues by emphasizing his current focus on jobs and the economy.
