Local and state governments are providing resources for people with school-related questions about H1N1 flu. In general, schools are following guidance from federal officials to send home students or staff who become sick but to keep campuses open unless they face unusual circumstances.

In Virginia, the state Department of Education has set up an information page available through its main Web site, http://www.doe.virginia.gov.

It directs people with H1N1 questions to call the state health department's toll-free number, 877-275-8343, during business hours. If necessary, the hours will be adjusted to accommodate the call volume.

In Maryland, the state Department of Education has a similar page through its main Web site, http://www.marylandpublicschools.org. Another information page is available through the state Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (http://www.dhmh.maryland.gov). The health department has also set up an H1N1 hotline at 877-633-5848 (877-MDFLU4U), operating 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

In the District, information is available on a link through the Department of Health Web site, http://www.doh.dc.gov. It refers questions to a 311 telephone information line for D.C. residents.
