Alexandria city officials are expected Tuesday to announce that acting Police Chief Earl Cook, a 30-year veteran of the department, will be named permanent chief, several sources said.
They have called a 4 p.m. news conference to make the announcement.
Cook had been the department's second-in-command until late last month, when former chief David P. Baker was arrested in Arlington for drunk driving. Baker, whose blood alcohol level was more than twice Virginia's legal limit, struck another vehicle near Interstate 66 on July 25. He pleaded guilty to driving under the influence on Aug. 14.
Cook is an Alexandria native who competed with Baker for the chief's job three years ago.
