HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Former Page County Sheriff Daniel W. Presgraves pleaded guilty yesterday in federal court to transforming his office into a criminal enterprise by using inmate labor to work on his home and commercial properties, and by obstructing justice.

Presgraves, 47, of Luray faces as much as 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to a single charge of racketeering. In admitting to criminal acts as part of the enterprise, Presgraves acknowledged using inmates from the county to do work for him, lying to federal investigators and advising several female employees not to cooperate with a federal investigation into charges that he had sexually harassed them.

U.S. District Court Judge Glen E. Conrad allowed Presgraves to remain free on bond pending sentencing. No date for sentencing was set.
