NEW YORK, Aug. 28 -- A law enforcement official says the celebrity disc jockey known as DJ AM has been found dead in a Manhattan apartment.

The official told the Associated Press that Adam Goldstein, 36, was found Friday evening. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because family hadn't been notified.

The death comes nearly a year after Goldstein survived a small-plane crash that killed four other people in South Carolina. Drummer Travis Barker of Blink-182 also survived that crash.

Police sources said investigators are looking into the possibility of a drug overdose, according to NBC New York.

Goldstein performed at Hollywood's most exclusive parties. He was also known for relationships with Nicole Richie, with whom he was briefly engaged in 2005, and Mandy Moore.

Barker's ex-wife, former Playboy Playmate Shanna Moakler, reportedly wrote of DJ AM's death on Twitter: "My deepest condolences for DJ AM, you were a great artist and will be severely missed. My thoughts and Prayers to his family and friends."
