Regarding the Aug. 24 Metro article "Va. Yogis Seeking Rapture, Not Regulation":

I don't know of anyone who entered yoga teacher training with thoughts of a lucrative career. For me, teaching yoga is a spiritual calling, a way to make a difference in the world. It makes me glad, not rich.

The state regulations imposing new rules, fees and certification requirements for yoga teachers who are already certified would be a heavy burden to Virginia yoga teachers. Some will go out of business, and many good teachers won't be able to pass on the tradition to other aspiring teachers, at least here in Virginia. Simply being able to afford the heavy fees and the lawyers and accountants to comply with the regulations is no guarantee of quality. Each time I teach, I watch the stressed-out people who walk in the door turn into relaxed, smiling people before they leave.

Virginia needs more yoga -- not less.
