A man who stabbed two people inside a Fairfax County apartment last week, one fatally, has been charged with murder, Fairfax police said yesterday.

Maria del Carmen Mejia, 68, of the 3400 block of Glen Carlyn Drive in the Baileys Crossroads area was stabbed multiple times in the abdomen Aug. 25, as was a 2-year-old girl whose name has not been released. Police allege that Jose F. Argueta, 42, of no fixed address stabbed Mejia and the girl before the attack was interrupted by a neighbor.

Argueta then fled to another apartment and struggled with a man who subdued him until police arrived. Argueta was initially charged with two counts of malicious wounding, but on Friday, Mejia died at Inova Fairfax Hospital. On Saturday, police obtained a new warrant charging Argueta with murder.
