A Dog's Life That Set Records Comes to End

-- The world's oldest dog died last week at age 21. That's 147 in dog years!

Chanel lived on Long Island, New York, and was recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest pooch on the planet. She often wore special tinted goggles because of cataracts in her eyes, and her once-red hair turned white long ago. Chanel used to run three miles a day with her owner, but lately she had been just hanging out at home. She wore sweaters to keep her warm.

Chanel's owners adopted her when she was 6 weeks old from a shelter in Virginia. Chanel wasn't the oldest dog ever. That record was set by a beagle from Virginia who lived to be 28.

No official word on who will inherit Chanel's special title. There are reports, however, that a family in Louisiana has submitted paperwork to Guinness about their mix-breed terrier, reportedly even older than Chanel.

Do you know how old your dog is? Now's the time to check your vet records!
