Where to Go, What to Do Near Kykuit and Around the Hudson River Valley

Kykuit is about 250 miles from the Capital Beltway. From the New Jersey Turnpike, take the Palisades Parkway north to the New York State Thruway (Interstate 87) east across the Tappan Zee Bridge. Take Exit 9 toward Tarrytown, then follow Route 9 north to the Philipsburg Manor/Kykuit Visitor Center in Sleepy Hollow.


Tarrytown House Estate and Conference Center, 49 E. Sunnyside Lane, Tarrytown, 800-553-8118, http://www.tarrytownhouseestate.com. Built around two 19th-century mansions once owned by Mary Duke Biddle, an heiress of the Duke tobacco fortune. Rooms start at $149.

Cellar 49, A pub in the former basement bowling alley of the Biddle Mansion at the Tarrytown House Estate and Conference Center, serving burgers, prime steaks and more. Hotel guests only. Entrees $16 to $42.

Visitor Center at Philipsburg Manor, 381 N. Broadway, Sleepy Hollow, 914-631-3992. On the site of a 300-year-old Dutch farm, this is where you purchase or pick up your tickets to Kykuit (open May to November, closed Tuesdays; tours start at $23 for adults), as well as five other properties, including Sunnyside, the home of author Washington Irving (house and ground tours, $12 for adults), and the Union Church of Pocantico Hills ($5), for which the Rockefellers commissioned nine windows, one by Henri Matisse and the rest by Marc Chagall.
