The National Capital Planning Commission voiced its unanimous approval Thursday of a preliminary National Park Service concept plan to modernize security and rehabilitate the grounds around the east side of the Lincoln Memorial and the adjacent Reflecting Pool.
The plan would add security bollards, more accessible sloping pathways to the memorial and dramatic paving of the plaza at the foot of the memorial at the west end of the Reflecting Pool.
It also envisions paving the edges of the pool, where there are now dirt paths, refurbishing benches and installing permanent lighting along the elm walks that flank the pool.
Commission member Herbert F. Ames called the concept "a magnificent start."
