Herndon at South Lakes, 7:30
Herndon (2-0), considered a sure playoff team before the season, appeared vulnerable in a 28-21 win over McLean last week. The Hornets will look to senior quarterback Zack Ozyck, who has passed for three touchdowns and rushed for two this season. South Lakes has outscored its first two opponents, 81-14, by relying heavily on running back Jajuan Jones (23 carries, 320 yards, five touchdowns). This rivalry game, known as the Baron Cameron Bowl (for the park located near both schools), has been dominated by Herndon, which has won the past six by a combined score of 202-39.
No. 14 Battlefield at Gar-Field, 7
Gar-Field running back Bryce Miller has fought through an early-season ankle injury but still has 378 yards and three touchdowns for the Indians (2-1). More of his runs would be touchdowns if his legs were 100 percent, Coach Tom Gryder said. Battlefield is 3-1 against Gar-Field since 2005 and has outscored the Indians, 67-22, in the series. Gar-Field has totaled only two points (a 7-2 loss in 2007) in the past two meetings -- both losses.
AROUND THE AREA
Expect plenty of points Thursday night at West Springfield, when No. 13 Stone Bridge arrives. A year ago, the two teams combined for 70 points in a season-opening win for Stone Bridge. Both now feature numerous new faces, but this one should still be a great game to watch. . . . W.T. Woodson (2-0) and Lee (2-0) square off on in a matchup that pits the Cavaliers' air attack -- fresh off quarterback Connor Reilly's 499-yard performance -- and the Lancers' strong ground attack of Idreis Augustus and Jazmier Williams -- a tandem that has rushed for 546 yards and seven of the team's eight rushing touchdowns. . . . The early-season gauntlet of a schedule for Westfield (1-1) finds the Bulldogs traveling to region-title contender Lake Braddock (1-1). The Bruins' aerial attack should be a stout test for Westfield's defense. . . . Osbourn running back Vidal Greene has suddenly become an even more vital part of the Eagles' offense. With quarterback Thomas Keith saddled with a sore knee, Greene, who rushed for 101 yards and four touchdowns last week, finds himself responsible for the bulk of Osbourn's offensive productivity.
