Alexandria police detectives are investigating the city's fourth homicide of the year after officers found a man dead in a parking lot just south of the Landmark Mall late Thursday.
Police identified the man as Sylvester Muskelly, 50, of no fixed address. His body was found in the parking lot of a residential apartment complex in the 300 block of South Whiting Street, not far from the intersection of South Van Dorn and Duke streets. A resident called police after hearing a gunshot and seeing Muskelly lying in the lot about 11 p.m. Thursday.
Muskelly was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy Friday determined that Muskelly had been shot once in the upper body.
Police ask that anyone with information about the shooting call detectives at 703-838-4444, or the Crime Solvers tip line at 703-838-4858, where witnesses can leave information anonymously.
