A Nanjemoy man was killed and two others were critically injured Tuesday when the man's car struck a guardrail and a tree on Route 6 in the Dentsville area of Charles County, police said.

Jeffrey D. Milan, 25, was traveling east on Route 6 just west of Cooksey Road about 8 a.m. when he lost control of his 1999 Ford Mustang and struck the guardrail, police said. Milan's Mustang then veered across both lanes of traffic and hit a tree on the opposite side of the road, police said.

Milan was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, police said. His passengers, Adrian P. Proffer, 26, and Kristina A. Himes, 24, both of Hollywood, were transported to nearby hospitals with life-threatening injuries.

Police said speed and driver error contributed to the accident.
