Prince George's County health officials are warning residents of a rise in the number of rabid bats reported in the area and are urging people to "bat-proof" their homes.

Officials said nine bats have tested positive for rabies since Aug. 1, and that one person came into contact with one. The person was preemptively treated for rabies, said department spokeswoman Erin Bradley.

Officials suggest repairing any holes in houses, using window screens and closing doors tightly. Residents can report a bat to the county at 301-780-7200.
