An Upper Marlboro man was killed and four others were injured early Wednesday when their vehicle overturned and crashed into a wooded area off White House Road in the Largo area, police said.

Rondell L. Matthews, 23, was driving east on White House Road near Ritchie Marlboro Road when he lost control of his 1992 Ford Explorer on a curve, police said. The sport-utility vehicle flipped over and went into the woods, killing Matthews and injuring his four passengers, police said.

The passengers -- an 18-year-old Greenbelt woman, a 28-year-old Upper Marlboro man, a 19-year-old Arlington woman and a 21-year-old Upper Marlboro man -- were all taken by ambulance to hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

Investigators said the crash, which occurred shortly before 2 a.m., was the result of Matthews's traveling too fast on the wet road.
