An 88-year-old woman pulling out of the Wonder Bread bakery in Waldorf was killed Wednesday morning after her car was struck by a van on Route 5, police said.

Helen Buchanan Owens of Temple Hills was trying to cross Route 5 just north of Ell Lane when a 1997 Chevrolet Astro van traveling south hit the side of her 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis, police said. Owens was taken to a hospital, where she died.

The driver of the van, Wayne Howard Taylor Smith, 41, of Huntingtown sustained minor injuries, authorities said.

Police said Owens failed to yield the right of way when she pulled onto Route 5. The crash occurred just before 10 a.m.
