Man Flees Scene of Fatal Accident in Va.

A man was killed in Leesburg early Thursday when the car in which he was a passenger rear-ended a dump truck, police said. The driver of the striking vehicle fled but was later apprehended and held for questioning.

Lt. Wes Thompson, a spokesman for the Leesburg police, said the collision occurred about 1:40 a.m. in the 1300 block of Market Street (Route 7), just outside the bypass that surrounds the city center.

The two-door Toyota Solara and the dump truck were both traveling westbound, Thompson said. The passenger of the Toyota, described as a male in his mid-20s, was pronounced dead at the scene. Neither of the drivers was injured.

Police have not yet determined whether alcohol or speed was a factor in the crash, Thompson said. He said the driver of the Toyota, also a male in his 20s, left the site of the collision but was picked up by authorities within a half-mile.

All three westbound lanes of Market Street remained closed into the morning rush hour. The eastbound lanes were open. Motorists were advised to expect delays.
