Itinerary: Next Stop, The World
Here's the itinerary for our trip. All dates and times are local.
MAY 22 Depart Washington 10 a.m., arrive Dallas almost an hour behind schedule to make a whisker-thin connection to Honolulu, where we arrive at 4:35 p.m. Get rental car, drive to North Shore of Oahu. Spend two nights on the North Shore and two in Honolulu.
MAY 26 Depart Honolulu 12:05 p.m., arrive Tokyo 3:30 p.m. the next day, even though the flight is only about eight hours. Because we crossed the international date line, we permanently lose a day here. Two nights in Tokyo.
MAY 29 Depart Tokyo 4:10 p.m., arrive Denpasar, Bali, 10:25 p.m. Drive inland to Ubud, where we spend four nights, before heading to the beach for two nights.
JUNE 4 Depart Bali 4 p.m., arrive Hong Kong 8:45 p.m. Three nights in Hong Kong.
JUNE 7 Depart Hong Kong 2:25 p.m., arrive New Delhi 7:45 p.m. (This touches down briefly in Bangkok.) One night in Delhi, one night in Agra, one more night scheduled in Delhi.
JUNE 10 Scheduled to depart Delhi 5:30 a.m.; flight canceled; remain in Delhi an extra night.
JUNE 11 Flight departs Delhi 5:30 a.m.; arrive Amman, Jordan, 8:45 a.m.; drive directly to Wadi Musa and the ruins of Petra. One night in Wadi Musa.
JUNE 12 Depart Amman 1:15 p.m., arrive Cairo 2:45 p.m. Two nights in Cairo.
JUNE 14 Depart Cairo 11:45 p.m. on a red-eye flight that arrives Madrid 3:45 a.m. June 15. Three nights in Madrid, then train to Barcelona, where we spend three nights.
JUNE 20 Depart Barcelona 10:55 a.m., arrive New York 1:45 p.m. Then wait and wait several unscheduled hours to arrive back in Washington three hours late -- the only noticeably late flight except for the Delhi cancellation.
