A 33-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a series of late-night thefts at Prince George's County schools in which a burglar with a crowbar and pickax broke into vending machines and stole money, county police said Friday night.
Police said the arrest came after a tip to the Crime Solvers line.
They said they have linked 11 break-ins at seven schools, beginning Aug. 17 at Crossland High. The most recent was Wednesday at the Surrattsville High School bus lot, police said.
Police released surveillance video this week showing a wiry man in shorts and a cap standing with feet spread widely and flailing at a vending machine with a bar or hammer.
Break-ins occurred four times at Friendly High School, along with incidents at Largo High Gwynn Park High, Gwynn Park Middle School and Forestville Military Academy, authorities said.
Cpl. Erica Johnson, a police spokeswoman, said that police have obtained a statement from the man but that she did not know whether charges have been filed.
