Metro is stepping up efforts to clean and disinfect parts of the transportation system to protect riders and employees from contracting swine flu, Metro said Tuesday in a statement.
As part of the plan, Metrobuses, Metrorail trains and MetroAccess vehicles, which are disinfected every week, will undergo more frequent cleaning, the statement said. Cleanings will target high-contact areas such as fareboxes, steering wheels, seats, poles, back-of-seat handles and overhead grab bars and handles.
Metro also plans to wipe down fare machines, fare gate targets and Farecard slots in rail stations.
Riders are encouraged to wash their hands frequently, cover their mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing and carry tissues and hand sanitizing gel or disinfecting wipes, the statement said.
