Calvert County Sheriff Mike Evans said his department will conduct an administrative review of the fatal July crash involving one of his deputies.
"There possibly may be administrative charges in this case," Evans said, referring to the crash that killed 18-year-old Rachael A. Campbell on the morning of July 24.
An independent accident investigation released last week found that Deputy C. Wayne Wells was driving at 110 mph northbound on Route 4 while responding to an emergency call in Dunkirk. The posted speed limit is 45 mph.
The investigation by Anne Arundel County police found that once Wells saw Campbell's car crossing from southbound Route 4 toward Apple Way, he was able to slow his 2006 Ford Crown Victoria cruiser to 83 to 87 mph before it struck the passenger side of Campbell's 1997 Buick LeSabre, causing the Buick to catch fire. Campbell died at the scene.
"The family welcomes the sheriff's office taking an honest look at the circumstances and . . . the family looks forward to hearing the results of the sheriff's investigation," said Keith Franz, an attorney for the Campbell family.
Franz said last week that the family is preparing a lawsuit against the sheriff's office.
"There are ways to solve this matter short of litigation," he said. "The sheriff's office would have to act responsibly."
