A 28-year-old Maryland man pleaded guilty this week to stealing $142,000 from the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington in a check scam.
Eric S. Curry of Capitol Heights worked as an accounting clerk for the YMCA and stole 33 blank YMCA checks over a four-month period that ended in January 2008. He then forged a YMCA official's signature on the checks and issued them to 14 people, who deposited the checks and split the proceeds with Curry, federal prosecutors said.
Curry pleaded guilty Monday in the District's federal court to conspiring to commit bank fraud. He faces almost three years in prison under federal guidelines at his sentencing Dec. 10.
Two D.C. men who received Curry's checks, Antoine Lewis, 26, and Charles L. Hawes, 30, have been charged in the scheme, court records show. Lewis pleaded guilty Tuesday to possession of a forged security.
