Tips on Biking in L.A.

If you're interested in conquering the country's car capital by bike, here are a number of resources that might be useful.

Venice Beach has several bike rental shops, including Perry's, which has eight locations along the beach between Venice and Santa Monica (310-939-0000,, and Venice Bike and Skate (21 Washington Blvd., 310-301-4011), offering beach cruisers and basic mountain bikes for about $8 an hour or $25 a day.

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation mails out free bike maps of the city; to receive one, fill out the online form at

The nonprofit organization CICLE ( offers useful resources, routes and tips for cycling in L.A.

The Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition,, is an advocacy group listing cyclist-led campaigns and activities throughout the area.
