A federal judge sentenced a former accountant for a District-based nonprofit group to 18 months in prison Thursday for stealing almost $180,000 from the organization.

Wendy Mansfield cried as U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly announced the sentence in the District's federal court. The judge also ordered Mansfield to pay a $25,961 fine.

Prosecutors said Mansfield, who pleaded guilty to wire fraud, put $176,000 in personal expenses on a credit card for the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies.

She used the card to purchase clothes and pay cellphone bills. Mansfield also gambled much of it away -- spending more than $24,000 at casinos, prosecutors said. Mansfield reached a $150,000 settlement with an insurance company that picked up the loss. She has paid off that amount, court records show.
