T.C. Williams senior linebacker Chelo Abbe scooped up a fumble with 90 seconds remaining and rumbled 50 yards for the game-winning touchdown as the Titans stunned No. 3 Oakton, 15-9, Thursday afternoon in Alexandria.
The Cougars (2-1) were simply trying to run out the clock when a muffed exchange between the quarterback and center set up Abbe's heroics.
"The ball just bounced up into my hands," Abbe said. "I just looked up, saw the end zone and ran as fast as I could."
Oakton jumped out to an early lead scoring on a 22-yard run by senior Mike Green. The Cougars pushed the lead to 9-0 on a 43-yard field goal by Ray Goins. Just before halftime, the Titans scored on a 10-yard run by Rashid Conteh to pull within 9-7.
It stayed that way until the final minutes, when the Cougars committed their fourth - and costliest - turnover.
"We had the game secure," Oakton Coach Joe Thompson said. "At that point, we were just trying to run out the clock. Offensively, they didn't beat us, we beat ourselves."
NO. 2 GOOD COUNSEL 49, GILMAN 37: Good Counsel sophomore Stefon Diggs returned a pair of kicks for touchdowns - one for 87 yards, the second for 94 - and the second-ranked Falcons (3-0) prevailed in a shootout over visiting Baltimore power Gilman.
"I was kind of hurt that they didn't think I could take it back again," Diggs said after he scored three touchdowns in the Falcons' win. "So the next one, I made them pay."
The consecutive kickoff returns for touchdowns were two of three Falcon scores in a span of 52 seconds in the second quarter. After the Greyhounds squib kicked to avoid the feet of Diggs on their next kickoff, senior wide receiver Louis Young, a Stanford recruit who finished with 151 yards receiving, faked a slant route before turning up field to grab a 71-touchdown pass from quarterback Zach Dancel on the first play from scrimmage.
NO. 13 STONE BRIDGE 36, W. SPRINGFIELD 33: Stone Bridge rallied from a fourth-quarter deficit with two long touchdowns in a two-minute span to hold off host West Springfield late and stay unbeaten. Kyle Gouveia broke through a pile of defenders for a 49-yard score to give the Bulldgos a 29-26 lead. Following a Spartans three-and-out, junior Spenser Rositano returned the ensuing punt 75 yards for a touchdown to give Stone Bridge (3-0) a 10-point cushion.
NO. 14 BATTLEFIELD 26, GAR-FIELD 6: Quarterback Bo Revell threw for a season-high 149 yards, running back Nagee Jackson scored three times and Battlefield (4-0) gained 19 first downs to just seven for host Gar-Field. Revell completed 11 of his 18 passes and threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Jackson (14 carries, 80 yards).
LEE 27, NO. 15 W.T. WOODSON 7: Running back Jazmier Williams scored two touchdowns, to lead the host Lancers (3-0, 3-0 AAA Patriot). Lee had three runners with more than 130 rushing yards, including Idreis Augustus, who ran for 161 yards and a touchdown.
