Democrat to Stay in Race for Annapolis Mayor
The first black woman to win the Democratic nomination for mayor of Annapolis has said she will stay in the race, after her campaign staff announced Friday that she was dropping out because of personal reasons.
Zina Pierre said Saturday that she had received numerous calls and e-mails from residents offering their support. She said she would stay in the race to continue to fight for her supporters.
Pierre, a 44-year-old political consultant, won the Democratic nomination Tuesday, putting her on track to become the first African American mayor of Annapolis. Her campaign announced her withdrawal Friday amid questions about personal financial problems, including a foreclosed house and state liens for unpaid income taxes.
Pierre did not comment beyond a brief statement. Wanda Stansbury, who said she is Pierre's new spokeswoman, said the candidate never officially withdrew from the race. Stansbury said Pierre's previous spokeswoman made a statement Friday about Pierre's intentions to withdraw based on what she knew at the time.
