A swastika was spray-painted on the driveway of a Montgomery County family's home while they were out of town for Rosh Hashanah, according to police and the family.
The 4-foot-wide marking, in blue paint, was reversed from the symbol used in Nazi Germany, police said.
Officers are investigating the vandalism as a possible hate crime, and said it probably occurred between Friday morning and Sunday night, police said.
Homeowner Chanan Zlotnitsky said his small cul-de-sac in Derwood is home to Jewish, Christian and Muslim families, all of whom get along, leading him to believe that the spray-painter was someone from beyond the immediate neighborhood.
"I'm just shocked that in Montgomery County, in the United States, I would see a hate crime like this," he said. "My world, the way it was before, has been shaken."
