The typical film about American high school students is populated with as many cliches as the modern heist movie. Instead of the demolitions expert, the hacker, the stunt driver and the chick who distracts the pit boss by sweeping by in a low-cut dress, there's the jock, the nerd, the cheerleader, the drama geek . . .

Is high school really like that? And if it is, so what? If adulthood is a collection of cliques, if it's a succession of minor triumphs, major angst, major accomplishments and minor stumbles, shouldn't teenagerhood be that as well?
