On Sept. 15, it took an hour to drive to church in Georgetown, normally a 15-minute trip. The Nation's Triathlon took place that morning, one of too many athletic events during the spring and fall.

Exercise is important to us all in a nation of overweight people. But why must we contend with so many events that disrupt traffic and make it difficult to get around? Can't planners consolidate their routes to a more centralized and smaller area away from bridges and major roads?
