New Mom Needs Food
48TH PL. NE, 1000 block, Sept. 10. A Humane Society officer responding to a call about an underweight dog met with an owner who had a brown brindle and two pit bull mixes. The woman said she had found the pregnant brindle about two weeks earlier and that she had since had a litter of puppies. The owner was told that it is common for dogs to lose a lot of weight after having puppies and that puppy food will help the mother gain weight. The owner said she plans to find homes for the puppies and have the adult dogs spayed and neutered.
Kitten Treated and Recovering
ALABAMA AVE. SE, 700 block, Sept. 9. Responding to a call about an ill-looking cat, a Humane Society officer found a 6-month-old gray-and-white tabby with a runny nose, swollen eyes and sneezing. The officer advised the owner that upper respiratory infections, such as what this cat seemed to have, can be fatal in young cats, if left untreated. The owner followed the officer's advice and took the kitten to the animal hospital the following day. It was recovering at home on antibiotics.
Adoptable Cocker Spaniel
NEW YORK AVE., 1200 block, Sept. 8. An 8-year old cocker spaniel was surrendered to the shelter and was made available for adoption.

Rottweiler Saved From the Street
TEMPLE HILLS, 23rd Pkwy., 4300 block, Sept. 10. A woman surrendered a 7-month-old Rottweiler mix to the league to be made available for adoption. She said that a relative who had owned the dog no longer wanted it and was going to abandon it on the street.
Horsepower Plus Kitten Power
LANHAM, Lois Lane, 7300 block, Sept. 11. A man found a stray 8-week-old kitten sleeping under the hood of his car and took it to the league. Veterinarians determined the animal to be healthy, and it was made available for adoption.
What's Bugging the Cat?
45TH ST. NE, 1100 block, Sept. 12. A man took his 1 1/2 -year-old cat to the league's medical center because he saw "black-and-white striped, long, skinny bugs" on the cat. Veterinarians could not find the bugs but treated the cat for fleas and ticks. The man was asked to bring in the bug for identification when he catches one.
Dogs Available for Adoption
Animal Rescue League dogs will be available for adoption from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Tenleytown Whole Foods, 4530 40th St. NW. The adoption fee is $195 and covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a checkup. For information, call 202-726-2556 or e-mail warl@warl.org.
